Program description:

Pinocchio, or How One Becomes Human

We all know the story of Master Geppetto, who decides to carve a boy named Pinocchio from a piece of wood – a very special log. But that is only where the story begins.

How does one become human? What shapes us, what influences us, and how do we withstand life’s challenges? More importantly, how do we respond to them? On his way to school, Pinocchio encounters peer bullying, entertainment without responsibility, and the lure of easy money. Every situation presents a choice, every choice has consequences, and every consequence leaves its mark on him. It shapes him.

The performance is based on the idea that a person does not become truly human simply by being born. The human soul is formed through relationships with others – in the ability to see another person, to feel responsibility, and to acknowledge one’s mistakes. What matters is not what someone is made of, but how they treat others.

In the end, Pinocchio does not become human because he is flawless, but because he takes responsibility for his actions.

The Pinklec Theatre Company is a professional theatre for children and young people, operating since 1987 within the Čakovec Cultural Centre, and in 2006 it acquired the status of a professional theatre company. The founder and artistic director of the theatre is Romano Bogdan.

Through performances for children and young audiences, it seeks to awaken society’s need for theatre, in the same way that children have a need for warmth, tenderness, acceptance, and communication. The aim is that every child retains, into the future, a memory of a theatrical story that contributes to the shaping of their aesthetic sensibility on the path to growing up.

The company brings together around one hundred children and young people in the Drama Studio Dada and, through several groups within the studio, educates and nurtures children and young people.

It is a member of professional theatre associations: UNIMA (the International Puppetry Association) and ASSITEJ (the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People).
