BOOK PROMOTIONS

PUPPETRY FOR THE 21ST CENTURY by Teodora Vigato

Publisher: Matica Hrvatska Branch in Zadar

The monograph consists of works that were created from 2003 to 2021 and were published in various magazines and collections of papers from symposia. It covers theoretical and historical topics related to puppetry in Zadar. The monograph is divided into two parts. The first part, which the author titled The Precursor of the 21st Century Zadar Puppetry, covers the activities of Luko Paljetak at the Zadar Puppet Theatre and the era that followed thereafter, after the realisation that everything can be expressed with puppets – an era related to the activities of the director Marin Carić, who directed puppetry towards adult audiences. The author read the play Judith, in her own setting, and compared it to the version of Judith performed in the 17th century. A walk through the city or the ambient play Mountains in a way rounded off fifty years of work at the Zadar Puppet Theatre. In the last decade of the 20th century, the foundations of a different puppetry in the new millennium were laid. In the third part of the monograph, the author deals with recent puppetry or the 21st century puppetry. She covers the performances by theme rather than linearly.

A TRAVELING ACTOR’S DREAM, by Teodora Vigato

Publisher: Matica Hrvatska Branch in Zadar

The monograph entitled A Travelling Actor’s Dream by the author Teodora Vigato presents Zlatko Košta’s journey as a puppeteer at the Zadar Puppet Theatre. The title is borrowed from the play A Traveling Actor’s Dream or the Princess and the Pea (1997) because the author believes that Košta’s animation peaked in the aforementioned play directed by the Bulgarian director Aleksandar Ivanov (Sunny Sunnisky). Košta occupied the nearly empty stage by himself, with many bike tyres used to tell us the story of the spoiled princess. It was a story about Košta himself, who was a traveling actor in search of happiness all his life.

Zlatko Košta created puppet roles and excellently animated puppets at the Zadar Puppet Theatre throughout his working life. He learned from the best teachers who left a big mark on his vocation as an actor and puppeteer, but also on Zadar puppetry in general.

By presenting the forty-year working life of an actor-puppeteer, the author also presented the development path of an actor-puppeteer from an ordinary puppet server to a puppet partner. In the monograph, we can read about the various relationships between the puppet and the animator that appeared in history and in theory of puppetry, that are still present today.
